Is Your Home At Risk?

Most of us are aware of the importance of conserving energy. Many people are surprised by the lighting proportion of their energy consumption. Most homeowners are totally unaware of the risk and danger that popular light fitting have.

I recently came across an article that highlights the risk of halogen downlights. Halogen downlights are extremely popular in new and renovated homes because they are inexpensive, easily installed and look good. Halogen downlights do however produce a lot of heat, typically in excess of 300 degrees celsius.

The extremely hot operating temperature of hologen downlights together with the quantities installed in houses and the lack of quality installation is a recipe for disaster. It amazes many experts that there have only been 57 house fires in Melbourne caused by the potential death trap of halogen downlights.

There is however a ‘bright’ side to specifying light fittings. Today there are a range of new technologies that are more energy efficient and are much safer.

Lighting and energy management are important to all homes, offices and workplaces. Many homeowners and business owners overlook lighting and power often taking it for granted. A well designed lighting system will not only be safer but be much more efficient. Effective lighting and energy management is one area of the home which will save you money sooner rather than later.

In my design practice, I regularly consult clients about the effective use of lighting. In many instances we can reduce the energy consumed by lighting by at least half justifying a huge saving. Almost all clients are shocked by the amount of energy consumed by their home. Modern lighting and energy management systems designed by professionals use the latest technologies that will further enhance your home, business and lifestyle.
